It's been government policy for a long time to have a large labor force in order to suppress wages. Supply/demand come into play. As Greenspan noted, removing restrictions on skilled worker immigration would lower the wages of "over-paid" skilled U.S. workers...including the professions.
It's illegal to hire an undocumented worker. Enforcing the laws already on the books would discourage illegals, wouldn't it? No job.... no reason to come here. Entire towns in Mexico rely on the money shipped back to Mexico from those jobs.
Why isn't current law enforced?
