Over the last 5 years, my own internet access has continued to worsen. It now takes me about 4 times as long to find something or go to another site than it did 5 years ago. As best I can tell, computer technology is going backward--getting slower and more cumbersome as time goes on.
I have Time Warner, which is the only cable internet service in my area. As far as I'm concerned, they're nothing but a criminal conspiracy. I should be paying 1/4th as much for my internet access as it is taking me over 4 times as long to open any site.
Is anyone else having the same problem, or are other people's internet services actually improving?

It could be something with your computer, or the spy network is bogged down.
I noticed with every XP update that at least twice as many packets were sent as received, and this continued for hours and hours as long as the computer was running, regardless of my activity at the time.
Under normal circumstances Received packets should be at least equal to Sent packets, and it is as long as I don't do the recommended XP update. I use wireless, so see this by punching on the little computer symbol in lower right corner of screen.

I have not noticed any change in the last 3 years. Our home has 5 adults and 5 computers. 3 computers are hardwired to the incoming Verizon fiber optic system I have and 2 are wireless links to the router. The 3 hardwired get better results but Verizon charged to set them up and wire them. The 2 wireless get used less and the expense was not justified.
One of the hardwired for one of my adult daughters accumilated spyware, etc because of the sites she goes to and she must deal with those problems. Sometimes she resorts to essentially starting over by dumping everything, formating via doing a full 'recovery'. Running good system protection software helps avoid most issues but she is a social net butterfly that recklessly does not care if she has to do a full 'recovery' to get a fresh start over and over again. That is price she pays, slower computer processing time from malicious software that the protective software does not clean out.

UnLC- the most likely culprit are the advertising programs that the sites you are visiting are associated with. And what sucks is that the websites you are visiting don't have a whole lot of leeway in the amount of bandwidth that their advertisers might be using up.

Thanks everybody for the feedback.
Interestingly enough, when I went to respond to this thread last night, my computer crashed and gave me the "your computer has been infected with a virus" explanation.
Thus, I did what I usually do every 2-3 months (as described by jeffollie on his daughter's computer), I shut down and did a full recovery. In order to get the computer back to where it started, this takes at least 2 hours, and sometimes 3.
But it does restore much of the lost speed.
The worst sites for picking up spyware and/or viruses are those dealing with firearm sales. They are slow to begin with, and if I search enough of them at one time, I usually have to shut the computer down completely to get it to work right.
I'm not sure why firearms sites cause this problem, but my best guess is that it immediately launches Government spyware and tracking.

Customers are wired onto nodes, the more customers the more bottleneck occurs. Your ISP probably needs to install more nodes, or they're just being cheap SOB's.
