Citibank closed an hour earlier than scheduled on Saturday, claiming the reason was to "train" employees to "improve customer service". Of course, they couldn't possibly have done this after they were closed now, could they?
Apparently, Citibank expects everyone to swallow this outright bullshit without question. There's no reason why they couldn't have kept the bank open regular hours, and simply trained the workers after hours.
By closing an hour earlier on a Saturday, they reduced cash withdrawals tremendously. Since they won't be open again until Monday, and they won't be open past 5PM until next Friday, they've effectively delayed a whole lot of cash withdrawals for several days to a week--since many people can't get to the bank during the week before 5PM.
They've also greatly reduced the number of people who would have come into the bank and cashed checks--which would have depleted their cash-on-hand even more.
Adding insult to injury, Citibank planted an AP story about this closure--which was picked up by hundreds of intellectually lazy news services across the country, who simply regurgitated Citibank's pre-canned story about why they were closing early on Saturday.
Apparently no one--at least not in the press--thinks there's anything suspicious about a bank closing its doors early on a Saturday, resulting in a huge reduction in checks cashed and bank withdrawals--and thus delaying those withdrawals from several days up to a week (some people can only get there on a Saturday, and will thus have to wait an entire week).
I don't know which pisses me off more, Citibank's surprise early closure on Saturday, or the absolute lack of original coverage of this by the press (barfing up a pre-written AP story does not qualify as original coverage--or even journalism, for that matter.)
