The numbers for Food Stamp usage and expenses have increased drastically since 2000. The number of recipient has almost tripled, going from 17 million to 44.7 million in 2011. But the cost rise has shot off the map. In 2000, the total cost was just $17 billion. By 2011, the total was roughly $76 billion. That's a +347% increase. During the mid 2000's, when the total cost was in the $25-26 billion range, I used to write that the cost was minuscule compared to other expenditures. But that's no longer the case.

The govt must keep providing food to avoid a repeat of the Great Depression well photographed and tragic appearances of SOUP KITCHENS for the desparately poor.
In an ancient approach, the Food Stamps are equal to the Romans providing bread in the slogan "bread and circuses". To keep the social peace and avoid the politics that arises for food riots, our govt provides stables money.
Jobs are hard to find for those with little or no skills in demand. Our job market pays a premium for skilled workers in situations where demand exists. Without demand, one could easily be highly skilled or educated without a job.
