In the middle of the worst recession since the 1930's, Congress has passed legislation to increase the number of High-Skilled Immigrant workers allowed into the US each year. The bill was passed by an overwhelming bipartisan majority.
The vote was as close to unanimous as I've ever seen--389-15, with 27 not voting.
Notable among the votes were the following:
Ron Paul did not vote.
Republicans Walter Jones of North Carolina and Duncan Hunter of California voted "No."
Marcie Kaptur (D-OH), Peter DeFazio (D-OR), and Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) voted "Yes."
Though the bill is disingenuously called the Fairness for High Skilled Immigrant Act, the only "Fairness" Congress was concerned with was Corporations' ability to indiscriminately obtain cheaper labor to displace American workers. In this case, it's in the high-skilled areas.
Apparently there just aren't enough American engineers & high tech workers available (who are willing to work for a janitor's wages.)
The language in the bill is not only deceptive, but almost impossible to follow, as it makes constant reference to other legislation that is not easily or readily accessible to the general public.
The intro to the bill states that it is designed to remove country-specific quotas for H1B visa immigrants. Thus it improves American Corporations' ability to shopping for skilled foreign workers who'll work for less than American workers.
In typical Republi-con-artist language, it inserts the word "fairness" into the title.
The 2nd part of the intro states that it increases the number of other types of immigrants allowed:
So with an alleged 8.6% official Unemployment rate, and 100 million Americans over the age of 16 not working, Congress believes we need EVEN MORE people to add to our work force.
To me, the most disappointing part of this is overwhelming the vote was in Congress. A bipartisan super, SUPER-majority wants to import more workers into this country to put more Americans out of work and suppress American wages even further.
Below is a copy of the actual votes, showing the Congressional super-pukes who voted for this:
