Below is a partial copy of the 1st page of a "redacted" article submitted to the New York Times by authors Flynt Leverett & Hillary Mann. The article was initially submitted for publication on December 22, 2006. The authors had already been assured by the CIA that the article contained no classified information . However, the Bush administration "intervened in the normal prepublication review process and demanded substantial deletions." In other words, despite the initial conclusion by the CIA that there was no information that jeopardized national security in the original article, the Bush administration forced the CIA to "black out" portions of the article because it was damaging or embarrassing to the Bush administration. The "blacked out" portions of the first page of this article can be seen below. (The " ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~" indicates a break in continuity on the page.) The authors wrote a follow-up article, titled What we wanted to tell you about IranJust when it seems the Bush dictatorship can't possibly advance its totalitarian agenda any further, new discoveries reveal still further efforts to suppress both free speech and a free press.

This is a new low, even for this administration. Cenorship for politcal purposes only. What can we expect from a government that taps our phones, reads our mail, monitors our library visits... When will Americans stand up again and demand our freedoms? I'm not afraid of terrorists; I'm afraid of the power of my own government.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. For every episode like this, there are literally hundreds we're not aware of.
One of the authors, Flynt Everett, appeared recently on MSNBC to discuss the situation with Iran. (He made no mention of this censored article, however. It would be no surprise if he's already received threats from the Bush dictatorship as a result of his revelation.)
