Shipments of 'phablets,' or large smartphones, to double in 2013
January 16, 2013
A slew of 5-inch screen smartphone-tablet hybrid devices have been coming out in recent months, and don't expect that trend to slow down anytime soon.
IHS ISuppli, a research and advisory firm, is forecasting the number of shipments for these so-called phablets to double in 2013 from last year.
According to a report Wednesday, IHS ISuppli expects phone manufacturers to ship 60.4 million phablets. That would be up 136% from the 25.6 million shipped in 2012.
The firm also expects the phablet market to continue growing and reach as many as 146 million shipped units in 2016, according to the report.
IHS ISuppli says Chinese manufacturers Huawei, ZTE and Lenovo are leading the charge for phablet shipments, with all three showing off new 5-inch-or-larger devices at this year's Consumer Electronics Show.
Huawei, in particular, is pushing the boundaries of what is still a phablet and not just a small tablet. At CES, Huawei announced the Ascend Mate, which has a 6.1-inch screen. For comparison, Google's Nexus 7 tablet has a 7-inch display.
But it's not just Chinese manufacturers that are coming out with phablets. Sony's new flagship, the Xperia Z, also has a 5-inch display, and HTC recently released the Droid DNA, the first phablet in the U.S. to feature a full 1080p HD display.
Samsung's 5.3-inch Galaxy Note device is largely credited with kicking off the worldwide phablet market when it launched in 2011.

jeffolie: One might short a bull ETF to gain the decay but this requires a margin position subject to changes imposed by the exchanges & brokers

jeffolie: Yes, the ETF features fading/leveraged decay because the futures and/or options used decay plus the administrative costs rise the decay, declining value ... I accept this as a cost and feature of all ETFs that purchase futures/options to maintain price
