Updated 6/6/06 at 13:45 EDTHere's the latest Lou Dobbs poll, taken today, comparing responses on different issues. A combined total of 57% chose either illegal immigration or border security as their most important issue. Poll updated 6/6/06 at 13:45 EDTThe link to the latter poll is at: www.cnn.com/POLLSERVER/results/25423.content.htmlLooks to me like a lot of people consider illegal immigration a very important issue. And a majority of Democrats want illegal immigration reduced or eliminated.

Thanks, Unlawful. Dem politicians are the densest people I have ever seen. They really must think thal all Hispanics are in favor of accepting illegal aliens, although they are not, by any means. I may have to vote for a Repub this time, just to endorse the stand of our Rep. Dana Rohrabacher.

Graybeard, I have to agree with you about the "denseness" of at least some Democrats. However, it appears the sentiment of the Democratic rank-and-file is much different than that of the party elite. I've been reading and posting on illegal immigration at Democratic Underground for the last 2 months. It appears 65-80% of Democrats want illegal immigration stopped, or at least reduced. And about the same percentage oppose amnesty, as well a guest workers. The pro-amnesty advocates, however, have made so much noise that their numbers have been overestimated. They represent a relatively small minority of the Democratic rank-and-file. The Democratic elite and legislators either don't seem to "get it," or don't want to get it. One pro-amnesty poster at DU continues to post polls in an attempt to prove most Democrats favor amnesty. However, he's proven himself wrong in every poll. He asked how many people thought Lou Dobbs was a racist. Over 2/3 of responders responded "no." He asked how many people favored "amnesty," or thought we should send illegal aliens home. 20% favored amnesty, 80% said we should send illegal aliens home. We can only hope that the Democratic Party leadership (not the DLC) is paying attention to this, instead of the minority of loud-mouthed amnesty/open borders advocates. Democrat Francine Busby's defeat in California's 50th district should be a wake-up call to Democrats. Her Republican opponent Bilbray won, despite the Republican Party's abysmal record and reputation, and despite the fact that Bilbray lost many votes to 3rd party candidate Griffiths, who ran exclusively on the platform of opposing illegal immigration. Had there not been a 3rd party candidate, Bibray's margin would have been much larger. Clearly Democrats could improve their voter favorability by taking a tough position opposing illegal immigration. And, just as clearly, they would be better representing their Democratic constituents, rather than the Corporate cheap labor lobby.
