Here's an interesting graphic from the Dept. of Energy showing the 10-yr. pattern of oil imports from Iraq. A pretty good case can be made from this graph that oil was a major reason for invading Iraq. In 2001, oil imports from Iraq were 289,998,000 barrels/year. By 2002 they had dropped almost 1/2--to 167,638,000 barrels/year. By 2004, they were back up to 239,758,000/year. How convenient.
