The following is a link to a CounterPunch article, attempting to explain how much the Iraq War is costing. The actual cost is just as clear as mud. The Surging Costs of the Iraq War

"Protecting the profit margins of major defense contractors still seems to count for more in the eyes of many legislators than protecting America’s most vulnerable troops." Exactly. And why does Congress assume it must pass this spending bill? They could easily refuse, and submit their own bill, cutting the funding for unnecessary projects. They could also refuse to pass it at altogether, if Bush refuses to set a deadline for Iraq withdrawal. Once again, the Democrats are holding all of the cards again on funding of Defense spending AND the Iraq War. They do have the power to "change-the-course." Funding must be approved by Congress. And Congress not only has the "right", but the obligation to control how that money is spent, and prevent it from being spent in a way that's contrary to the wishes of their voting constituents (As opposed to their big money campaign contributors.) Congress has an absolute obligation to cut off any and all funding if it disapproves of how it will be spent. Democrats have a clear majority in the House, and a borderline majority in the Senate. They have all the power needed to end the Iraq War. And they are absolutely and completely obligated to do so, if ending the war is what the people want. No more B.S. about "we don't have the votes." Democrats do have the votes to stop all funding and end the Iraq war. What they lack is backbone. And they lack the will to serve their contituents' interests, instead of their big-money campaign contributors.
