I just heard on NPR today that the post office is in the red 3.8 billion and the year is not even over yet. It has been in the red going on for 3 years now. They said that even though they have given tens of thousands of workers (I believe 35k+) early retirement to save money unless they either 1 cut out Saturdays or 2 double first class stamps they will continue to go further in the red. but they do not want to do either one of those items because they said it would hurt them even more if they did. Hey I got an idea, lets have this government run National Health Care ohhh the reason they said that they are in the red is because of the Internet and employee pensions, heath care and retirement benefits. I think the mail carrier jobs around my area are for about 16-22 bucks an hour. My friend has worked at the post office for about 14 years. I think he said he makes about 30+ bucks an hour lol

One big generator of revenue I heard about for the Post Office was junk mail and when the Great Recession hit the amount of junk mail they were processing dropped significantly.
Also I think we're seeing the Post Office coming into its correct pre-bubble, post-consumer size, just like the automotive industry.
I bet the next industry to be hammered will be the air lines, there will come a point when they realize that collectively slitting their throats is a losing strategy.

"Hey I got an idea, lets have this government run National Health Care"
they run the VA healthcare, and I wouldn't mind having that right now.

"Hey I got an idea, lets have this government run National Health Care" Hey, I gotta better idea. Let's let Corporate America run something that's funded entirely by taxpayers'--like Medicare Advantage.

Personally, I appreciate and use the USPS. The cost of mailing via USPS is great compared to private delivery services.
USPS service at my local post office is very good except during seasonal busy periods.
I have never had a letter nor package misdelievered.
I want USPS workers to get a good wage with benefits.
I do not care if USPS rates go up. Paying 50 cents for a letter's postage would mean nothing to me.

I cant remember the last time I used the Post Office, maybe over a year ago when I used to get porno (which they would steal 1/3 of the time. And, paying these stoners, Mexicans who cant speak English, and white trailer trash 17-20 bucks an hour plus benefits is insane, even my friend who works there is not a regular Joe, hes missing a hand, thats how he got the job (and no he wasnt in Nam, he was fucking off.) but im glad your happy, but its still 3.8 billion in the hole. Maybe if you want to "help them" you should subscribe to thousands more "junk mail" bullshit. ;D

I think Jeffollie has the right idea. Why not just raise the price of postage? I'd like nothing better than to see the amount of mail in my mailbox decrease as a result in a price increase in postage. Paying 50 cents to have a letter go across country in 2-3 days is still a great deal. And it beats the devil out of having to take it yourself.
