The mag Foreign Policy has a great article on how the introduction of heavily armored vehicles(MRAPS) in Afghanistan has set us back. Seems the beasts can only travel on half way decent roads and can't traverse the more remote areas that Hummers could. So as a result there are entire regions where the U.S. hasn't set foot for over a year because of this change. As a result the Taliban have been able to make significant inroads into these areas since they know the U.S. can't go there anymore with any sort of sustainable presence. And the introduction of 70 ton M1-Abrams won't help since they need a massive logistical tail of vehicles to keep them going. Unarmored fuelers, haulers and maintainers will make juicy targets for the Taliban. Worse, since our soldiers are so heavily overloaded(avg. 100lbs of gear), it's not feasible to use them on extended foot patrols, etc. In short our infantry can't even perform the duties of their WWII counterparts. This war that needs to come to an abrupt halt.
We're not accomplishing anything, other than getting Americans soldiers killed and creating even more enemies around the world.
