No hiring; GA can't get workers to harvest the crops for $9 an hour, according to Dobermann. What happened to supply & demand? Lou Dobbs used to say that doubling the wage of farm workers would raise the price of a head of lettuce by just ten cents.
Sure, it's hard work, and there will be a high turnover, but the job will get done. My older brothers and sisters and I all worked the crops in the school summer recess to help the family and for money to buy clothes.
The govt could help by not counting farm labor income against welfare pay.

Use convicts. Better than letting them lift weights and lay around all day plotting their next crime spree once they get out.
As for the welfare types, they'd rather die than work if the ones here in CA are any indication. Many are 4th or 5th generation welfare proles. Worse, many are morbidly obese, alkys and/or drug addicts, they would die like flies in the onion fields. Besides this is a protected class. You'd have the NAACP, SPLC and ACLU slapping lawsuits on Georgia for racism and indentured servitude the moment it is even considered.
And those field worker jobs. I bet the farmers don't even advertise them. They want to use illegals not citizens.

Boohoo, they have to operate by the laws of Supply and Demand, and can't import slaves, boohoo.

I bet the farmers don't even advertise them. They want to use illegals not citizens. I have zero love lost for people who would rather get welfare than work. When I used to be a Republican I was all about work first, welfare as a last resort. The idea of people preferring the dole to working is intolerable. It's bullshit. Kick their asses out. And put a boot up the NAACP, ACLU or anyone else who enables them to reject work in favor of the dole. The problem with farm work is that it's DANGEROUS. People would die like flies in the onion fields because of the constant threat of heat stroke. Plus the equipment is dangerous, too. Here in California the courts or some other authority threw out laws to ensure water breaks for farm workers. These people were dying of heat stroke. There are numerous ways in which farm work is dangerous AND where it can be made safer. If I were poor and on welfare I would avoid farm work, too. Why would I want to get dead working for someone who has clear legal license to sacrifice my life in the name of cutting labor costs? What good is a paycheck to me and my wife and kids if I am dead? Now they're even worse off. This is how they treat workers in China.

The people who made picking veggies dangerous were the business farmers themselves. Look the nasty fucks wouldn't even give water breaks to the workers or even given them latrines to use until they were forced to by law. And there are so few latrines that many times the workers will still defecate or urinate on the crops they pick.
Out in Bakersfield the fuckers would(and still) fly crop dusters spraying all sorts of toxic pesticides and this spray would often coat the workers.
Guess what that did? It destroyed the kidneys of the workers in record numbers, so much so that Bakersfield had for a while the largest dialysis clinic in the country. Then there are the cancers.
And we taxpayers have to foot that bill.
The other thing is that the farmers don't want to pay workman's compensation. Why in the fuck does anyone unemployed want to do field work with no bennies and if you get hurt, you pay your own way.
I hope those farmers squeal like pigs.

Farmers are rich, you should check out their gigantic mansions.
Tax the rich.
