My ob/gyn told me, when I was struggling in pre-menopause (and skinny as a rail).... "Fat girls get along better." Why? Because, fat can make estrogen, he tells me. Therefore, if a girl is very very fat, she's probably well loaded with hormones.

Got a letter in the mail a while back from my old company... hinting that our pension plan was underfunded, and might eventually be turned over to the PBGC. It's almost unthinkable that one could work for a company of sterling reputation for 23 years... and end up in this situation.
Strange new world!

Heck, it's ALREADY expensive!
I don't spend a lot of money on side items any more. When I grocery shop, I focus on the main things I need, and don't buy much else.
When a piece of beef costs ten dollars... and household cleaning items are almost all four or five dollars... it's a little frightening.

It IS indeed a terrible stress for you, and I hope you can (do your best to) try to protect your physical and emotional health, for the duration.
I'll tell ya, Judes, it wasn't until years after I was downsized, that I was able to appreciate just how much stress I was really under.
I think I just went kind of numb to it all, as a coping mechanism to help me survive. Going from day to day, not really knowing what the end of things will be, and also wondering how much of your own money it's going to take, before you can get stabilized.... you try not to dwell on it, but of course, you do.
I really think it takes a toll on heath. I read somewhere that people who are downsized in their middle years end up more often having heart problems, and yes, i wouldn't doubt it one bit.
I don't think anyone can understand, who doesn't PERSONALLY walk in those shoes. The only reason they tell ya, "oh, you have to move on with your life"?.... is because they don't want to have to deal with the unpleasantness of hearing about it.
My two cents.
Hang in there sweetheart, God will take care of you!

How have you been, judes? Are things levelling out for you, as far as the jobs situation and your economic wellbeing? I think of you from time to time, hope things are better for you now.

You can't use hardship to justify stealing. Period.
I've gone through hardship aplenty and never stole anything.
If you use a credit card, then you are borrowing money. If you borrow money, you have to repay money.
If you let your affairs get out of hand, then it is YOUR fault alone, and nobody else's. Don't make others responsible for your doings. You get your own finances under control, don't look to others to pick up the slack. They don't owe that to you.
If their terms are egregious, then don't do business with the bastards. When they can't make money off of you, they will either have to look to the reason why, or go out of business. If you do wrong when they do wrong, all that does is cloud the issue. All THEY see is that you are a thieving no good SOB. And they are right.

I went through unemployment for around three years, from 1997 to 2000, so get off your high horse, dear brother.
I only worked less than half of that time. I never did one unethical thing. And at that time, they weren't extending unemployment, so after six months, I had to spend my own money. I never borrowed one dime from anybody, not even from family members. I never borrowed one dime from my 401k. When I got sick, I did not go to the doctor, because I knew I couldn't pay any bill I ran up. When I finally got re-employed, it was at a 50% pay cut.
I DID learn to dumpster dive.
No, wrong is wrong. I don't take back one word I uttered.

I think it's bullschitt, because nobody held a gun to your head and made you use a credit card. If you won't pay for something that you told them you would pay them back for, then that is no different than stealing.
If you don't like their terms, then for Pete's sakes, don't deal with them. It's not like it's impossible to exist without using a credit card.

"Govt job pay is relatively too high, largely because private sector pay has dropped "
I think it's amusing that they want to make federal jobs suck as bad as private sector jobs.
Instead of doing what it would take to rectify the totally screwed up situation with the private sector jobs..... they now want to throw as much mud as possible on federal jobs, to make everything "match" nicely.

Heh, Valvoline. They are part of my old company that I was downsized from. You would be better off to use Mobil 1 synthetic oil, but each to his own. I wouldn't use Valvoline on a rusty hinge.

How old is your daughter? Is she wanting something "sporty", or just a good deal on the price? I bought a new (2009) Chevy Impala last June, and thought the price was pretty reasonable. It's more of a "family" car, but I do see a lot of them on the road, so I guess everyone likes them as well as I do. Give one a test drive!

Don't know how ANYBODY could enjoy unemployment. I always felt like Big Brother was watching me to make damn sure I didn't defraud him, and begrudging me every nickel. How they could make it more miserable, I don't know. You're slogging through every day, praying to find something that may not even be there... not really knowing when you'll get out of the Twilight Zone. I hated it.

"It depends. Which costs you more? Washing Fido yourself, which costs you time, or trading some money you have to a dog groomer so that you have additional time to yourself?"
Wow.
You haven't spent one single poor day in your life, have you? You really and truly don't understand what poverty really is, do you?

Yes, but most services are something you can do without, if push comes to shove. If I don't have much income, I'm not going to be paying money to a dog groomer, I'm going to wash Fido myself. The only services I'm going to pay for would be something like automotive repair.
When I lost my job and had minimal income, I did not avail myself of a hairdresser, a laundry, a pet groomer, or even a doctor.

Funny thing is, it is the workers themselves who are being blamed 100% for not saving enough for retirement! Smack their hands, smack their hands - you dueless, bad, lazy workers. And yet, you're right.... the "new" setup for employment doesn't do anything to foster a solid, secure, good way to do that.
Remember the old saying, "a rolling stone gathers no moss"? Well, they've made rolling stones out of all of us. It's not like we have a choice. Longterm employment isn't easy to find nowadays.
Plus, even if you do get a 401k and try valiantly to save for your old age... the stock market will milk that like a milk cow.
Maybe there ARE folks out there who are financially savvy enough to make it work for them, but I don't think the average person really does know enough to get ahead this way.
Frankly, if I had it to do over again, I wouldn't participate in a 401k at all. It's got "bullseye" written all over it - just something for fraudsters/Wall Street/whoever, to go after. Probably if you just had a regular passbook savings, you'd be money ahead, by the time that the stock market fluctuates a thousand different unpredictable directions.

I'm afraid we haven't even begun paying the price that we're gonna pay for "the new morality" - you know, the one where everything you do is just OK.
It is going to be a disaster on many, many levels.

I wouldn't be too quick to poo poo the idea though. Certainly, if you're doing both bad and good together... abusing your health with ciggies, alcohol, and drugs... all the good food in the world probably can't overcome your destructive habits.
I will say, since I've improved my eating habits, started eating a better diet, quit smoking, started walking, etc., my general health is MUCH BETTER. When I think back to how crappy I used to feel, I know this is the way to go.

.... if Palin is elected, she will do what Bush42 did and Obama is doing now - govern as a kleptocratic tool and continue the gang raping of the country under the dogma that what is good for Wall Street and the rich is good for the people. A big amen on that. But IMO she would be even worse, and probably make poor Bush42 look like a bloomin' genius by the time she was done.

Well, I live in a part of the country that most people consider the asshole of the universe. Most folks do not want to live here. And I had an employer that liked it that way, because most of the employees were therefore a captive audience. So they could pretty much do as they pleased, and that gave them a lot of power.
Then, I busted my patootie to do everything in my power that would keep them happy.

Facing the day with a slight feeling of foreboding! Because? Got a letter in the mail last night from my old employer.... the one I worked with for 23 years.
They are dropping broad hints that the company pension fund is underfunded, has been for the last three years, and that the federal PBGC *may* perhaps become our new bestest friend.
Let us hope not. Wouldn't surprise me though!

Very good! High five, guy.
I've lost 21 pounds in the last 3 or 4 months. Was 177 (at 5'-6"), now 156, hope to be 133 or somewhere near it. My feet don't hurt any more! People kept telling me I looked fine. It's hard to tell when you're too heavy sometimes, but when I bought my new car... they took my picture with my car for a calender. When they mailed it to me... I was appalled.
I started walking every day, and that suppressed my appetite quite a bit.
Hey, we'll get there!

For the biggest investment of your entire life, it would have paid them to do all the due diligence that it took, to make 100% sure that everything in that contract was fully understood and agreed upon. Surely there is still some honest folks to deal with out there. Might take longer to find them, but it would be worth the effort.
Let the crooks be the ones who do what's wrong.
Don't ever stoop to their unscrupulous ways. Do what's right, because it's right. If you don't, then who is there left to keep the whole game from going to hell in a hand basket?

Walking away is a bad way of doing business.
Better if they had just not entered into a bad contract in the first place.
