They are absolutely related - the biggest trade deficit is with china, and the biggest portion of the china deficit is Walmart.

Wal-Mart reported same store sales gains of 2.4% vs. its 1% to 2% forecast. They stated that home goods and apparel sales were weak but grocery sales surged. bigpicture.typepad.com/

That is interesting. I wonder how much of their food section is imported. I have an uncle who said he knew we were in trouble when America started importing food, since that has always been our stronghold. I know I bought some shrimp last week that was imported from Bangledesh. And of course, we all know about the troubles with imported dog food and toothpaste. I have to say I'm a fan of the FDA. Here is a news release about China's ex-food and drug chief: news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070710/ap_on_re_as/china_tainted_products

It is interesting that this op-ed piece ran in the NY Times the day after I said I bought some imported shrimp. Catfish with a Side of ScombroidThanks for posting this. Since I never eat seafood, I wasn't aware of how much seafood is imported. It's amazing that more people aren't getting sick from seafood. Or maybe they are, and it just isn't reported. It's becoming necessary for consumers to start asking and verifying where all products they consume have come from. And if you can't verify where it came from, don't buy it.

My mother-in-law shops at MaoMart. I found some trail mix in her cupboard last year, and COO included China and Vietnam. I threw it away.
People can be so stupid.

GB I've started reading the labels on everything I buy now, regarding where it was made. If I have a choice between something that clearly says "Made in the USA," and one that does not, I'll take the one made in the U.S. Even vitamins at CVS Pharmacy show a real difference. For example, brand name One-A-Day vitamins say "Made in USA." The CVS generic version does not. Could this be an 'oversight' in labeling the generic? Not in a month of Sundays.

He's right. I saw today that over a third of our food is now imported, with half of that or 1/6 comes from china. granted some imported food is specialty or exotic foreign cuisine imported by choice
Now I remember we were always told that china could not produce enough food for its burgeoning population, and that the US was the worlds bread basket. We should be exporting food products - not importing them - whats wrong with this picture?
And why are we getting food from china at all? the only possible reason is profits and skirting safety regulations
Ah yes - the old "blame the media" distraction. In my opinion the media isn't being harsh enough or looking into this deep enough - to caught up in the world of corporate propagand to do so I reckon
