Below is graphic representation from the New York Time showing the "progress" being made in Iraq, measuring several different parameters. For May 2007, we had more Americans killed than any previous May, and more Iraqi civilian casualties than any previous May. The "surge" is sure working well, isn't it.

Just to clear this up before I receive replies, I am 100% AGAINST the Iraq war, but that comment lights a fire under my ass...I hope you mean working in a different sense than ACCOMPLISHING THE GOAL? The "surge" is Bullshit, but it is not intended to end the War or anything, it simply has to do with a series of Operations with limited objectives (goals)...To answer that (sarcastic?) comment, yes the "surge" is working, for it's MILITARY goal...
Operation Phantom Thunder and Operation Fardh al-Qanoon has been so far a Strategical success, especially at the small unit level...Don't take my word for it, how about the actual FACTS--not just OUR death toll, but the enemies, and the OBJECTIVES...
Everyone needs to stop listening and adding to the politicizing of actual warfare, aka the actual combat missions and objectives. There is no such thing as a "surge" as presented by BOTH political sides...
The only people who actually care about HOW to fight the war in Iraq is the soldiers....if they need a few more Brigades to secure a sector, fine, but let's not call the "surge" a solution to the Iraq war, nor an "escalation of violence"...20,000 is not a large increase, nor is it small. It is enough to perform many needed strategic duties, but is not enough to have a final solution type of impact.
Here are some statistics...
Operation Phantom Thunder and Operation Fardh al-Qanoon (a.k.a. "The troop surge")
Operation Phantom Thunder statistics so far:
Casualties
U.S.---12 killed Iraqi Security Forces---30 killed
"Bad Guys" (AQI)
195 killed (5 bombers) 41 wounded 721 suspected combatants detained
Operation Fardh al-Qanoon
U.S. 202 Killed 605+ Wounded
ISF (Iraqi Security Forces) 367 killed
"Enemy" 531 killed ~2,500 captured
Have we lost more soldiers since the "surge"? Yes, but have we been MORE EFFECTIVE?? Damn straight...
