I have used TT for years, but have never felt like trusting them with my data. I bought it at a local store just last week, looking for the latest date code. I loaded it into an internet connected computer, and downloaded updates, over 50 meg worth.
I do my taxes on a computer that is not now connected to the net, so I loaded the original TT, then loaded the updates via CD from the net enabled computer. This way, I have the updates, and isolated from the net. Don't know yet how I'll handle state tax, as I didn't order a mail-in update soon enough.
Now to the proof. Every time I finish or modify a segment with fresh data, TT triggers a dialup command on my non-net enabled computer. I'm sure that is not for my benefit. Is preliminary data just compiled by Quicken, or is it reported to the IRS?

Here we are a year later. This has been read 154 times, and no replies. Am I the only one who doesn't trust Turbotax, or maybe the other providers?

Sorry Graybeard, I can't help ya. I have never tried it. I actually pay someone to do mine, but was thinking about TT in the future, but what you say makes me think twice about it.

Check this out, graybeard: computerizedaccount.tripod.com/computerizedaccountingtraining/id27.htmland this: www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,821479,00.asp and about 2/3 of the way down this page: www.accu-usa.org/2003-02-Main.htmlUltimately, the best way to find out what's going on is to monitor your network traffic and find out, by way of one of the DNS lookup services, with whom it is, exactly, your software is trying to connect. Since, however, you have the presence of mind and realistic attitude toward technology that is the hallmark of the thoughtful and intelligent, your simple and elegant solution of disdaining connectivity for any machine containing sensitive personal data has obviated the neccesity for any further research. The above links will probably be sufficient to satisfy your curiosity but you can always run a search on the the bundled spyware to which the above articles refer.
