Palin Says Russia as Neighbor Gives Her Insights (Update1)
Sept. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Alaska Governor Sarah Palin said her state's closeness to Russia and Canada gives her legitimate foreign policy credentials.
``Our next-door neighbors are foreign countries, there in the state that I am the executive of,'' Palin, 44, the Republican vice presidential nominee, said in an interview with CBS's Katie Couric aired today.
Palin, who had never met a foreign head of state until sessions Sept. 23 with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and President Alvaro Uribe of Colombia, has been trying to build her foreign-policy credentials.
Asked by Couric whether she had ever been involved with Russia, Palin said, ``We have trade missions back and forth, we do. It's very important when you consider even national-security issues with Russia.''
When Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin comes into U.S. airspace, ``Where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border,'' Palin said.
In her first TV interview Sept. 11 with ABC News, Palin said one can see Russia from part of Alaska, a comment that drew derision from some.
When asked by Couric about that comment, Palin struggled for words.
``It's funny that a comment like that was kind of made to, I don't know, you know, reporters,'' she said.
``Mocked?'' Couric suggested.
``Mocked, yeah, I guess that's the word, yeah,'' Palin said.
Recent Passport
Palin said she didn't get a passport until last year because she wasn't ``one of those who maybe came from a background of, you know, kids who perhaps graduate college and their parents give them a passport and give them a backpack and say, `Go off and travel the world.' No, I've worked all my life. In fact, I usually had two jobs all my life until I had kids.''
Palin rejected negotiations with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, saying, ``You can't just sit down with him with no preconditions being met.''
Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama ``is so off base in his proclamation that he would meet with some of these leaders around our world who would seek to destroy America and that without preconditions being met,'' Palin said. ``That's beyond naive. And it's beyond bad judgment.''

Uh, Guvnor, those weren't negotiations you had at the UN. You don't speak for the US. Thankfully.
