I was tempted to put this under Pet Peeves.
Last week I was told that National City Bank now charges $3 to cash a personal check drawn on their bank. That's un-American! Seems like it would be illegal.
Who knows what it is anymore, but I was taught years ago in a law class that if you present a check drawn on their bank, made out to you, and you have id, they can't refuse to cash it.
Chase just sent out a booklet to former Wamu business accounts they have taken over. I looked: yep, they charge $6 "check cashing fee" to non-account holders!
I expect their personal accounts charge the same, or will. Is there any bank not adding these crap charges?

is that to cash that in person? some banks have been doing that since 2000. i remember when my friend first found out about that and was so pissed- he went back in and threw all their deposit slips and what not on the floor.

graybeard, look for a credit union. I belong to one and never get charged to cash any check, ever.

We should reward banks with this behavior by keeping as much of our cash outside their bank, and in a safe--or even in a safety deposit box in the bank itself.
Just keep enough in the bank to cover checks, and keep the rest elsewhere.

If I'm not a CU member, and walk into your credit union with a check from you, Judes, will they charge me to cash it? If not, I'm going to move some money.

GB Hi GB, I have never heard of that happening to anyone I've written a check to. I went to their website and it clearly states no check cashing fees under the checking account section. Next time I am there though I can ask to be sure, but I've never heard of it happening.
