6.9 50 miles south of Mexicali. In the upstairs of our Model T era house, it shook pretty good, but no damage noted so far. It lasted a long time for a quake. This is just past full moon. About half the quakes occur near dawn or sunset, near full moon, and near New (dark) moon. It's the pull, together or opposed, of the sun and moon. Jan. 16, New moon 5:30pm Haiti . . . 7.3 Feb. 27, Full moon 3:30am Chile. . . 8.8 Mar. 14, New moon 7:43 am Los Angeles 4.3 Apr. 5, 1/4 past full, 4pm; Mexicali . 6.9 For the full list, see Earthquake 2010 from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page GB

I live in Phoenix and I didn't feel a thing.
Once in Japan I felt a small tremor once, barely noticeable to others but I felt it, it was really really weird.

I live in Phoenix and I didn't feel a thing. Once in Japan I felt a small tremor once, barely noticeable to others but I felt it, it was really really weird. We could feel it here in Orange County (CA)--a good 130 miles north of the Mexican border. I was leaning over at the time I first felt it, and thought I was having a vertigo attack. Then when I sat down, I realized the room was still moving. Having grown up with earthquakes here in California, the quake wasn't a tremendous surprise. The initial tremor, however, did seem to last a lot longer than previous quakes. It was certainly a surprise to find that it had originated so far away. It was a lot more noticeable here than the distance would have suggested.

At 7.2, it was the strongest in Calif since the Landers quake in 1992, which was 7.3. It's the second strongest worldwide this year, and double the strength of the 7.0 that killed 2-300,000 in Haiti. The difference was proximity to people, and construction standards. Haiti hadn't had a strong quake in 2-300 years, so were totally unprepared. They had even less reason to fear a quake than people in the US Midwest, where earthquake resistant construction is unheard of.

More on the moon phases as relates earthquakes - and volcanoes. There had been sporadic seismic activity in Iceland, and there is a site showing a timeline of activity since the first of 2010. It moves fast, but it appears that peaks of activity were at full and dark moons. On the last full moon - in March - there was an eruption. Then on the 14th of this month, the dark moon, began the sustained eruption that is wreaking havoc on air travel in Europe.
