I took advantage of Earth Day discounts and rebates to buy a new clothes washer today at below 50% of the regular price. It was timely because my current washer gets a lot of use with 5 adults in my house and its was making those fatal sounds common before repairs would be needed.

You didn't beat the deal I got at Lowesy's a couple of years ago. They had a washer that had been whacked on the top not too near the timer. $73. The shame was, I had just put a lot of effort patching the rust in my 10 year old Maytag, which was a better machine, except for the rusty upper surface panel.

I had a great pair of Maytags but they only lasted about 9 years due to my mistreatment. Maytag got bought and revised their inner workings so that they no longer last as long. I miss that great pair of Maytags.

I anticipate being in the market for a washer in the next several months.

$352 after rebates and discounts, this includes all taxes and fees. Wow. I guess I wasn't really aware of how much inflation there'd been since the last time I bought washing machine. I bought one in Long Beach for a little over $300 in 1997. If $352 is 1/2 price, then that'd make it a $704 washer. If that's a typical price, that's over a 100% price increase compared to what I bought 13 years ago. As I mentioned elsewhere, 2-bedroom apartment rentals have increased by a similar %. In 1996, I was paying $600/month in rent for a 2-bedroom (non-lease) apt. in a complex in Anaheim near Knott's Berry Farm. Starting in 2008, I've been paying $1,250/month for 2-bedroom apt. in Cypress (with even worse parking.) How the hell does our crooked, scumbag Government concoct an inflation rate of only +37% since 1996 ?

High Efficiency, Energy Star washers are expensive right now and the only ones that qualify for these rebates.
The govenment inflation rates are bad, we all know that. For example, the government accumilatively subtracts improvements in safety and efficiency from the price of a car when calculating the car's increase in price for inflation purposes. The government probably does the same type of subtraction for all appliances.
