California home foreclosures are 7-fold higher in the 4th quarter of 2006 than in the 4th quarter of 2005. During the 4th quarter of 2005, there were 874. For the 4th quarter of 2006, the number was a whopping 6,078. Filings for foreclosure during the 4th quarter of 2006 were 37,273. This was more than double the 15,196 notices filed in the 4th quarter of 2005. The 37,273 is the highest number since 1998. Below is a graphic representation of the recent rise in default notices (1st step of foreclosure process) from the L.A. Times. As shown elsewhere in this forum, asking prices for homes in California have declined significantly over the last 6-7 months.
