Boston Massacre
Scenario A) What John Adams (the defense attorney for British Soldiers and later US president) describes as "a motley rabble of saucy boys, negroes and molattoes, Irish teagues and out landish jack tarrs" are protesting high minded issues like Taxation without Representation at a time when the poor colonists were never even represented by their own colonial government.
Scenario B) The population of Boston recently had increased by 25% with all male British soldiers who supplemented their poor income with part time jobs in Boston and willing to work for less then the colonists earned; either getting Bostonian workers fired or dragging their wages down.
Boston Tea Party.
Scenario A) A bunch of people spontaneously dress up as Injuns (terrorists of their day) hijack a ship and destroy private property for high minded issues like Taxation without Representation at a time when the poor colonists were never even represented by their own colonial government.
Scenario B) John Hancock, a leading smuggler and competitor of the gigantic global mega-corporation British East India Company, organizes a mob to hijack the very first shipment of cheap bargain basement tea; cheap tea that will most certainly put him and everyone that works for Hancock out of the job.
US Civil War
Scenario A) The Northern states fought a gallant war for Freedom and Liberty and to free the black slaves at a time when most whites were racists.
Scenario B) Northern whites were terrified of the prospect of allowing the institution of slavery to expand into where they lived, and have to compete with slave labor; dragging their wages down or losing their jobs. If the south were to win then the free northerners would be living in the same squalid conditions as the free southerners were living in, as one witness describes the south:
New York Draft riots:
Blacks come to New York and are willing to work for less wages than others, like the Irish. For those who have no clue about history, New York was a NORTHERN STATE.
A Southern Officer memoirs, "We were not fighting for the perpetuation of slavery, but for the principle of States Rights and Free Trade, and in defense of our homes which were being ruthlessly invaded." Indeed you were/are.

To-day is the first time within a week when I have seen a household where the women are neatly dressed and the children cleanly. The people who have inhabited the houses along the roads for fifty miles behind us are among the most degraded specimens of humanity I have ever seen. Many of the families I now refer to do not belong to the class known as the "poor whites" of the South, for these are large landowners, and holders of from ten to forty slaves.
"The peasantry of France are uneducated, but they are usually cleanly in their habits. The serfs of Russia are ignorant, but they are semi-barbarous, and have, until lately, been slaves. A large proportion of the working classes in England are debased, but they work. But the people I have seen and talked to for several days are not only disgustingly filthy in their houses and their persons, but are so provokingly lazy or "shiftless," as Mrs. Stowe has it, that they appear more like corpses recalled to a momentary existence than live human beings, and I have felt like applying a galvanic battery to see if they could be made to move. Even the inroads of our foragers do not start them into life; they loll around like sloths, and barely find energy enough to utter a whining lamentation that they will starve.
