www.businessinsider.com/wikileaks-haiti-minimum-wage-the-nation-2011-6WIKILEAKS: U.S. Fought To Lower Minimum Wage In Haiti So Hanes And Levis Would Stay Cheap Robert Johnson | Jun. 3, 2011, 2:49 PM A Wikileaks post published on The Nation shows that the Obama Administration fought to keep Haitian wages at 31 cents an hour. (This article was taken down by The Nation due to an embargo, but it was excerpted at Columbia Journalism Review.) It started when Haiti passed a law two years ago raising its minimum wage to 61 cents an hour. According to an embassy cable: Thanks to U.S. intervention, the minimum was raised only to 31 cents.

Nice catch, Jacquelope. Thanks for posting this. And let's thank Wikileaks as well for letting us know what our rotten Corporatist government is trying to keep secret. This article now appears all over the on multiple forums of all political stripes--both so-called "right" leaning and "left" leaning. It had gotten 1,550 views on DU (Democratic Underground) before it was moved to another part of the DU forum. This is why American workers can't "compete" in the global labor market. It's because we can't survive on $3/day, not because of any lack of jobs skills or education. American workers' productivity--quantity of goods produced per hour--is 2nd to none. But we cost more in quantity produced per $. If American workers make $58/day vs. $3/day for a Haitian worker, Americans would have to almost 20 x as productive to be "competitive" with Haitian workers. That's impossible if Haitian workers are as well capitalized as American workers. Even if American workers 10 X as productive as Haitian workers, they'd lose this competition. This isn't a problem that can be fixed by better training, better job skills, or more education. It's a problem that can only be solved by TARIFFS.

In addition, as China becomes more expensive for globalist multinational corporations to exploit, then Brazil has become the next place to exploit. Champion exploiter Steve Jobs is moving Apple's manufacturing from China to Brazil which completed its tax haven creation for siting a new Apple manufacturing in Brazil rather than China. Steve Jobs's manufacturing corporation called Foxconn employs 400,000 Chinese with such horrible pay and benefits that Steve Jobs's Foxconn in China has made lots of press because of the exceptional high suicide rate in his Chinese manufacturing plants. Tariffs are the best and proven answer to return services and manufacturing jobs from suicide plagued exploiting corporations like Apple.

And what happens when Brazil's standard of living increases and their workers want higher pay? What happens when Apple runs out of cheap places to go?

The price of 501's in 1980's, when they were made in America, were half of what they are today. I guess that pretty much negates the "cheap foreign slave labor = cheaper prices" myth.
(appealing to the obtuse greed of the anarchist-right Libertarian, neocon center, and corporatist left) Try a different tact, apparently slavery don't bother these sub-humans, appeal to their greedy instincts. Tell them globalization actually will increase prices they pay, the sub-human greed-whores will then pay attention.

Wow, reading replies to this on other websites.
"Bush"
"Bush"
"Bush"
"Tea Party"
"Conservative greed"
The Article clearly states "Obama Administration" and "State Department" who is Hellary Clin-tawn.
This is why I purchased a handgun years ago. Civilized behavior in this country, in many areas, is as thin as paper; we are one step away from devolving into civil war and barbarism. I suggest you all purchase weapons too just in case.
Partisan jingoism today is really really high, and I'm extremely partisan myself but damn.

It happened on Obama's watch, and this move is his fault, but it is basically a continuation of the traditional neo con, Republican corporatist bullshit that has plagued America for decades. The reason I would still vote for Obama now is to avoid having another Citizens United bought and paid for justice being added to the Supreme Court. That's a really big issue, bigger than many Democrats and disaffected Obama supporters (one of which is me) realize. If a Republican becomes President we have ZERO chance of ever unseating the 5-4 Corporatist USSC majority. I cannot repeat this often enough.

I don't see Obama being unseated given the candidates the GOP has. Obama is bad, but the GOP types are just a band of Ogres and midgets.

Replacing the "corporatist USSC majority" with anti-white ethno-national secessionist racist homosexual, private property thieving Green-Fascist, anarchy-promoting USSC majority isn't much of an an improvement. No offense, but you're part of the problem. You exchange one low life extreme for another.

No offense, but you're part of the problem. You exchange one low life extreme for another. Wait, who's the anti-white ethno-nationalist racist... huh? Got any names for this group, or USSC decisions that you're referring to? And what are homosexuals doing to harm America? Where are these ethno-national secessionists in the USSC? And what do you mean by green-fascism? I'm not seeing anything beyond the effort to keep our air breathable and our water drinkable. I don't us want to become like Linfeng, China. I'm not denying that there are extremists of every stripe. The Earth First! bunch should be prosecuted as terrorists but we're talking about the USSC here... what support do these nutjobs have in the USSC? The corporate elite keeps us divided by preaching fear of the homosexuals, the illegals, the non-whites, and so on. So in the end we wind up owned by Chinese anti-Western bastards and corporate fascists. And private property? Good luck with that when it's all foreclosed on.

Okay I had to get back up because something congealed about what you said fredorbob.
What I am about to say is easily fraught with misinterpretation and very easy to take the wrong way, but still, here goes.
The secessionists and Green-Fascists and anarchists have their place. When the Greens are at the throat of corporations that pollute our water supply and are strong enough to hinder them, they have their use. When the anarchists like Anonymous are taking swipes at Bank of America and the Koch Brothers, they certainly are of use to America. When corporations base their sense of pride and power on how many Americans they hire and how clean they keep our environment and how much they give back to the nation that made them strong, they too have their use. When we have corporations taking our jobs and going overseas we need the welfare state so that our country's children don't starve or die waiting for liver transplants the way Nataline Sarskiyan did. Ultimately, if somehow the Neo Cons and the Koch beasts and ALEC and the Corporate State take over America and lock it down, we may be forced to become secessionists to flee the madness that such a world brings. Or worse, we may need to become outright rebels.
But here's the other side of the sword. When the Greens turn Fascist and want to spike trees, they need to be put back down in their place. When Anarchist hackers go around picking on honest citizens and terrorizing people for the "lulz", they need to be put down. When trial lawyers and Government laws destroy basic law and order to make life easy for criminals like empowering burglars to sue you for getting chewed on by a dog for invading your home, they have gotten out of hand and they need to be put back down in their place. When these anti-white factions, wherever they are (and I've seen no such thing) go around lynching whites and getting away with it, they're racist and need to get handled the same way we handle the Skinheads - by putting them down. When welfare gets to the point that people would rather have the dole than take advantage of a huge job boom - then welfare needs to get cut back, severely.
We need a balance of power in America and the Far Right has taken things way out of whack. Maybe if the left wing extremists resurge and get their leftist claws around the Far Right's throats, then both sides might be so completely bogged down that we the working class can join forces and take them all down.
In the end what I want is an America by, for and of the working class. Not an America ruled by the corporate elite, bogged down by the lazy layabouts, not just a land of homosexuals, not a land that treats homosexuals as second class citizens, not just the land of the whites, or the blacks, or the Mexicans or whoever, not just a land ruled by the patriarchy or handed to the feminazis, none of that. I want a land ruled by the. working. class.
Man I hope this don't get me banned, but I just had to say it.

Wait, who's the anti-white ethno-nationalist racist... huh? Got any names for this group, Democratic Party Socialist Party Green Party any leftist party, take your pick. Anarchy-promoting USSC is when they rule in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church. And agitating one ethnic group against another also leads to anarchy. A good example of Green-Fascism is the Global Warming movement. And marriage isn't for fags. I don't want to hear about them, I don't want to see them, and I don't care to hear about their bedside exploits just like I don't care to hear about heterosexual bedside exploits. Keep their pornographic behavior underground, just like heterosexual pornography should be underground and not advertised with neon lights and pomp. If the fags think they are a special class, then they can get lynched.
