The following poll was started on Democratic Underground by a pro-amnesty, Lou Dobbs hater, hoping to validate his own blind, race-baiting views and rhetoric. The implication by the poster of the poll is that everyone that opposes illegal immigration is a "racist." Therefore, Lou Dobbs must be a racist. In fact, the poster placed the same poll twice, hoping the results would be different the 2nd time. They were not. Here is the poll question: "Lou Dobbs is a racist xenophobe...agree?"(from Democratic Underground, starting on 5/25/06 continued through 6/30/06) Looks to me like most people (66%) do not think Dobbs is a racist. And only 28% do. And this is from a site that is labeled by Right-Wingers as an "extreme" leftist site.

The only reason I can think of that the Dems have for wanting illegal immegration to continue is that most minorities seem to vote Dem for some reason.
Illegal immegration costs the US taxpayer money. Money that can be used for programs that benefit citizens, citizens that cotntribute, or have contributed to the American way of life. As it stands now, if we allow more and more illegal immegrants into our country, it is going to cost each and every one of us more and more money when it could be used to fix SS and Medicare. For the life of me, I cannot understand this way of thinking.

Bswilkin,
Welcome to the Economic Populist Forum.
I have the same trouble that you do in understanding why Dems seem soft on illegal immigration.
I think part of it is concern for getting minority votes. But I think an even bigger part is that many of the Dem's big campaign donors support open borders and amnesty because of the cheap labor benefit.
Every poll shows a majority of rank-and-file Democrats oppose illegal immigration, amnesty, and guest workers. I think the real impetus to the Democratic Party elite's advocacy of open borders and amnesty is the large campaign contributions they receive from business and Corporate interests. And these same interests who benefit from open borders, amnesty, and guest workers.

Yes, welcom, Barry. Good to see you really do read some of what I forward. To me, racism is bringing in illegal aliens to clean up and rebuild New Orleans, while the legal residents of NO are displaced and unemployed. GB

Its not racist at all for Americans to expect ther laws to be respected and their border secure.
The democratic parties softness seems to come from the progressives and ultra libs. True labor democrats are completely against illegal immigration. At the same time the neoconservatives who preach globalization and open border "new world order" are also soft on illegals. Only true conservatives seem to have some common ground on this issue with Labor dems.
And we must continue to make sure there is a clear distinction between legal and ILLEGAL immigration, as the open border proponents keep trying to blur that distinction. You'd be hard pressed to find any American against legal immigration - and this is why the racism canard is patently false.
However - now as we have passed 300 million population we really need to look hard at legal immigration as well - and only let in those with no criminal records and those that bring skills and education to the table.

Blueneck, I'm in 100% agreement with you on this. Our population and labor force grow much faster than those of any other industrialized nation. The result is constant downward pressure on wages from the increasing labor supply. And this downward pressure from population increase is much greater than that of France (0.35%/year), Germany (-0.02%/year), Japan (0.02%/year), Great Britain (0.28%/year), South Korea (0.42%/year), and even China (0.59%/year). U.S. population increase is much greater, on the order of 1% per year, and this is applies only to the known increase in population. (We don't really know how many illegal immigrants are coming in that we haven't counted).
