"Electors for the presidency across the country have now formally cast their votes, setting the stage for President Obama's 2nd inauguration in January. Many believe the president was reelected only through the incompetence of his opponent. President Obama has presided over 4 years of meager economic recovery and disastrous, job-killing trade policies. We can hope for no better in his 2nd term if his administration does not change its thinking on trade.
There was some hope in 2008 that the newly elected president might actually understand our trade problems. As a candidate he pledged to renegotiate NAFTA and opposed our pending trade deal with South Korea (KORUS). Once in office, however, he bowed to the will of the corporatist cronies he surrounded himself with and took up the false cause of "free trade," which has proven to be a disaster.
Free trade is uncontrolled, unrestricted access to our economy, tariff- and duty-free, with products produced at labor rates in foreign countries much lower than ours, sometimes as low as $4 per hour, that we cannot compete with. We are thus forced to outsource most of our production, which kills most of our formerly productive jobs. This is forcing us to outsource most of our manufacturing, enriching the individuals and companies that outsource our manufacturing, turning more millionaires into billionaires while our own labor force - the middle class - evaporates.
Obama's administration has pledged to continue this misguided path into their second term. He previously pledged to double exports by 2014; a perfectly noble goal if it didn't come at the expense of a flood of cheap, job-killing imports. He is pursuing this goal by passing more debilitating "free trade" agreements modeled after KORUS, which has ballooned our trade deficit with South Korea since implementation last March. The depressed U.S. economy cannot handle an even larger supply of imports without losing more domestic industries.
President Obama was given a huge responsibility by the American people. They chose him to be the leader of the United States at a time when the economic future of our country is in grave danger. If we could see a return to candidate Obama from 2008, we might have a shot, but it is clear the trade policies our president has pursued have failed. If we continue in this manner, there is little hope for the United States.
Write or call President Obama and ask him what he will do to fix our massive destructive trade problems that are killing our jobs, our manufacturing and increasing our trade and budget deficits.
