In a disgusting demonstration of cowardice, and blatant disregard for the Constitution, the Senate passed Bush's version of the FISA modernization bill. The bill essentially allows Bush and Gonzales to spy on Americans without a warrant and without any judicial oversight. The bill is still being debated in the House. The Republicans are still arguing that we need to just throw out the entire Constitution in order to fight the "war on terra". Hopefully House Dems will find the backbone that Senate Dems lacked and defeat the bill. Below is an excerpt from a Yahoo News article on the subject. Senate passes Bush terrorism spy billBy LARA JAKES JORDAN, Associated Press Writer 8/4/07 " The Senate, in a high-stakes showdown over national security, voted late Friday to temporarily give President Bush expanded authority to eavesdrop on suspected foreign terrorists without court warrants. The House, meanwhile, rejected a Democratic version of the bill.
Democratic leaders there were working on a plan to bring up the Senate-passed measure and vote on it Saturday in response to Bush's demand that Congress give him expanded powers before leaving for vacation this weekend.
The White House applauded the Senate vote and urged the House to quickly follow suit....
Senate Democrats reluctantly voted for a plan largely crafted by the White House after Bush promised to veto a stricter proposal that would have required a court review to begin within 10 days.
The Senate bill gives Bush the expanded eavesdropping authority for six months. The temporary powers give Congress time to hammer out a more comprehensive plan instead of rushing approval for a permanent bill in the waning hours before lawmakers begin their monthlong break.
The Senate vote was 60-28. Both parties had agreed to require 60 votes for passage.
Senate Republicans, aided by Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell, said the update to the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, would at least temporarily close gaps in the nation's security system...." Here's a link to the full text of S 1927, the new Destroy America Act

The Senate voted 60-28 to pass the bill. California's Senator Feinstein vote YES. Senator Feinstein did not vote.
It is apparent from listening to House debate that the original bill that was favored by Democrats was satisfactory to intelligence chief McConnell. However, following his consult with our liar-in-chief, George Bush, McConnell was forced to change his mind.
Bush apparently insisted that McConnell not approve. As a result, McConnell withdrew his approval. This demonstrates Bush's lie, that if McConnell thought the bill was acceptable, it would be passed.

The House Passed the Destroy America Bill, as 40+ worthless Democrats crossed over and voted "yes" on throwing out the 4th Amendment.
Special thanks should go to spineless and worthless House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, for even allowing the bill to come up for discussion. She had the option of not allowing it to even come up. But in her typical, invertebrate way, she "didn't want to appear weak on terrorism." So she allowed it to be debated and voted on, knowing beforehand that the bill would be passed.
Thanks again, speaker Pelosi, for selling out the American people and kissing the collective asses of the Bush administration.
I just wish you were in my district, so I campaign for your opponent.

Below is a list of Senate Democrats who voted to eliminate the 4th Amendment, by voting yes on S 1927, the "Protect" America Act. The act allows Bush and Gonzales to continue previously illegal wiretapping, without a warrant, and without any oversight whatsoever. The list comes from the DailyKosThe following are the Democrats who voted " yes": Evan Bayh (Indiana); Tom Carper (Delaware); Bob Casey (Pennsylvania); Kent Conrad (North Dakota); Dianne Feinstein (California); Daniel Inouye (Hawai‘i); Amy Klobuchar (Minnesota); Mary Landrieu (Louisiana); Blanche Lincoln (Arkansas); Claire McCaskill (Missouri); Barbara Mikulski (Maryland); Bill Nelson (Florida); Ben Nelson (Nebraska); Mark Pryor (Arkansas); Ken Salazar (Colorado); Jim Webb (Virginia). "Senators Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Christopher Dodd and Barack Obama all opposed the bill, as did 23 other Democrats and Bernie Sanders, the independent from Vermont...." Needless to say, ALL Republican Senators voted "yes." It's very disappointing to see Webb and McCaskill voting "yes." (The others were no surprise.) If either one of them had voted against it, it would have failed, as the Senate had agreed it would take 60 to pass, and it only received 60 votes. Once again, my own Senator (Feinstein) voted against the 4th Amendment and in favor of expanding Bush's dictatorial powers. This was a truly sad day in American history.
