Not as complicated as many conspiracy theorists would have you believe (judging from the number of articles I've seen). Really boils down to Supply & Demand. For example, the chart below compares the daily retail sales of gasoline to the Labor Force Participation Rate. (Essentially, if you ain't workin', you ain't buyin' all that much gas.) The chart shows a 94% positive correlation. Over the last 25 years! (And Yes, I do realize that correlation is NOT causation, but it does have explanatory benefits.)
