Republican Ron Paul tells ABC News that he has an impressive $2.4 million in cash on hand after raising an equal amount during the second quarter, putting him ahead of one-time Republican frontrunner John McCain, who reported this week he has only $2 million in the bank. In an exclusive interview taped Friday and airing Sunday on "This Week," Paul said his campaign is on a better trajectory than McCain's. "I think some of the candidates are on the down-slope, and we're on the up-slope," said Paul. blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2007/07/ron-paul-tops-m.html

I see this as a definate plus for the Paul camp and a big problem for the McCain camp. Usually a canadate who garners more donations, is the one to contend with and vis versa. I also believe most of Paul's support is the net-roots variety, versus McCain's boring old fashioned approach to rally the troops.

McCain peaked and is a long downslide. he is on the wrong side of nearly every major issue - immigration, Iraq, the economy even amongst his own party. He even sold out one of his core pronciples - POW and MIA for the Bush tortures. In my opinion that was the beginning of the end for McCain. I even heard a phrase coined over this by a pundit - selling out principle for party is "pulling a McCain" He should just do the honorable thing and pull out at this point.

This is really exciting news, especially combined with the whole Iowa mess the Republicans made for themselves by excluding Ron Paul (the six-candidate forum was vastly outdrawn by Paul's quickly put together counter-conference).

McCain needs to throw in the towel. More from the article: " Paul's cash on hand puts him in third place in the Republican field in that important metric, although he is well behind leader Rudy Giuliani, who has $18 million in the bank, and Mitt Romney, with $12 million.
Paul, who polls show with support in the low single digits, said his surprisingly strong fundraising is the best measure of his support.
"I think people have underestimated the number of people in this country who are interested in a freedom message," says the Republican congressman from Texas, who has strong libertarian leanings." I think Paul is underestimating his own appeal as a Populist and a man of the people, and someone not beholden to rich special interests and Corporations. It's Paul's independent, fiscally responsible, anti-Corporate, anti-cheap labor lobby, anti-Iraq war positions that I like. He's not afraid to go against his own party when he knows his party is wrong. And that distinguishes him from most other candidates, save for Dennis Kucinich.
