One thing you can say about Menards is they advertise and promote ":Made in USA" products unlike their big box competiton that line their shelves with cheapo chinese and mexican crap

Thanks, I didn't know that about Menard. I'm in Rockford, Illinois for a couple of weeks, preparing a family house for rental. I'll make them first on my list for buying. We don't have Menard in SoCalif.
I couldn't find copper nails there, which I need to kill a tree over the sewer line.

Menards also has the same chinese and mexican crap that the others have, but at least they try to offer made in USA alternatives, unlike their competition.
Garbage cans - - the irony - since the US genates at least twice as much garbage as the rest of the world the gargage can is unique to the american market. Also an example of a bulky product that the shipping costs offset any "savings" by producing offshore

In my neck of the woods Menards is the Wal-Mart of home supply. They are known for driving small and family owned businesses to the ground with their race to the bottom. In other words their business model forces small and medium size businesses to move jobs overseas. The so called made in the USA alternatives rely heavily or entirely on out of USA subcontractors. Like Wal-Mart they have bought out / run out of town locally owned lumber yards.

Just as all "Big Box" stores are the anathema of small business.
Again we are forced to a lesser of evils choice - the big box that at least offers US alternatives, or the ones that don't

Its not necessary a question of not shopping at the big box, but getting what you can from local businesses. One example, is I have been getting all my meat from a local farm. I joke its food insurance. Frankly, getting meat from large grocery stores scares the shit out of me these days. Since we have built up our tolerance to lead, they are now putting the date rape drug in products.

Having worked in a supermarket - I can tell you stories about the meat dept - you'd never want to eat it again
