Obama Woos Latinos in New Mexico, Attacks McCain on Immigration
By Kim Chipman and Hans Nichols
Oct. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Democrat Barack Obama, working to win over Latino voters in New Mexico, attacked Republican John McCain's record and argued that his rival can't be trusted to overhaul the country's immigration laws. ..
-------
``Latino community, you hold this election in your hands,'' said Obama, whose rally featured New Mexico's Bill Richardson, the country's only Hispanic governor, and comedian George Lopez. ``You could be the swing vote all across this country.'' ...
-------
McCain, 72, also campaigned yesterday in Albuquerque, where he touted his experience as a senator from neighboring Arizona and sought to convince New Mexican voters that he understands regional issues better than his opponent...
------
New Mexico's Hispanic population will account for more than 40 percent of the state's voters, according to Simon Rosenberg of NDN, a Democratic group in Washington.
Obama, a first-term senator from Illinois, pledged yesterday to protect the borders and crack down on employers who hire undocumented workers, while also ensuring illegal immigrants already in the U.S. are provided a path to citizenship...
--------
I've always puzzled why Latinos who are US citizens, want immigration reform. I can only conclude that they have a selfish interest in bringing their own families into the US.
The Dem study, above, is misleading. Much of the Hispanic population in New Mexico goes back to the early 1800s. They do not identify with Mexico, and call themselves Spanish.
Obama's pledge to "protect the borders and crack down on illegal employers" is encouraging. However, I wonder how many of those illegal employers are contributing big bucks to him?
While refusing public campaign financing, Obama should have refused contributions over the $2,000 or some smaller number.
