Our newest member " Lasher" sent me this excellent link on the Federal Budget. It's the most comprehensible document I've yet to see on what our tax dollars are spent on. The site also has a budget calculator readers can use, to see what the budget would be if certain changes were made. It was excellent to see a breakdown on how much the tax cuts were contributing to our deficit, and how much capital gains, foreign profit exemptions, and corporate tax cuts contributed. I eliminated all of them in my "new" budget, as well as the Medicare Prescription Drug/Pharmaceutical Welfare plan from my budget. I reduced the $401 Billion deficit down to $89 billion by eliminating the tax cuts on the top 5%, as well as all of the Corporate giveaways and the capital gains exemption on home sales and the deduction for imputed rental income. However, I didn't touch any social welfare programs. And I didn't touch defense spending, simply because I don't know which areas to cut, in order to reduce any of the Defense contractor giveaways. Also, I didn't know where to cut to eliminate the Highway/Transportation Bill, which is costing about $46 billion/year. It was interesting to see how much the deficit could be cut by eliminating tax cuts for the rich and Corporations. The link(s) can be found at: www.nathannewman.org/nbs/www.nathannewman.org/nbs/longbudget06.htmlFrom the last link you can actually scroll down to the bottom and hit the button to see what the actual numbers are at present, in addition to changing some of the numbers to see what the budget would be if they were changed. Lasher, thanks again for the link.

Below is a copy from the National Priorities site showing defense spending, and 3 of the areas it goes into. The numbers don't add up perfectly, but his gives a general idea of how much is being spent in certain areas. Notice the $211 billion that goes to Defense Contractors. Suppose this could be reduced a little?
