Ye gods!.... how did $100k get to be $433k? Is this a loan of long standing? Did you put it on your credit card or something? You need to get this squared away SOON.

Wow! you'd have to make some pretty righteous money to offset all that.
For my 1973-1975 vocational school education, I paid exactlly $4 a month. So since I graduated ahead of schedule, I therefore paid less than 96 dollars for my entire education. Also, I worked as a co-op student, so I actually made that back, plus some.
Then .... my employer paid for my two year degree, every dime of it, except I did have to buy the books, so that wasn't too bad either.
I've never made a lot of money, but I didn't pay a lot either! ;D

Boomers would inherit much less if Medicare had not absorbed much of their parents medical bills. My mother never got Medicare (since she never worked, and my dad never paid into SS) , but she would have gotten *Medicaid*, if she had lived long enough to deplete all her savings. As it was, the rest home did a damn good job of decimating most of her savings. Does Medicare pay that much? From what I've read, it didn't sound like it.

I'm already hanging on by the skin of my teeth, and I'm only 57, LOL. ;D After working many years in engineering drafting, I have more neck and back problems than Kelloggs has cornflakes. I should have gone years ago.... and by golly, when I get to be 62, hell itself ain't gonna stop me from leaving. But then, I said the exact same thing for age 55.

For males 25 - 30? Probably why we haven't had any movies worth watching for the last twenty or thirty years. Don't bother even going to the video store anymore... there's nothing there to find, unless you can find some of the older titles, and even those are disappearing. It's all just doofus garbage designed for morons. Thing is, though.... we're NOT dead, we of the preceding generation. If there WAS a movie worth seeing, I would love to go see it. Why do they have to make a financial killing at everything they do? they act as if they have only one audience and the rest of us don't exist.

Even *I* don't agree with my mom... and if I'd had kids of my own?.... no, I would not have done what she did.
I hear a lot of people say, well, your parents don't OWE you anything.
Okay, very well, I can accept that.
If they don't want to be involved, that's fine... but I thought they should TELL me so early on, so I'd KNOW that, and could maybe help myself. Don't just throw me out on the tender mercies of the government, or whoever. See, I just assumed that I WAS doing my part, by making good grades. I didn't think I was a poor investment! But apparently she did.
The only positive I can pull out if it is, it did make me way stronger and more independent than I would normally have been. I took hold of my own education, because it was apparent that nobody else would. And it did cause me to walk into some interesting paths in life.... that turned out to be more lucrative than if I had done all the stereotypical things that kids my age did.
I don't know why my dad let her do it. He lived thru the Great Depression, and stayed home with his dad well into his thirties!
Ironically, when she got old... she wanted me to move back in with her. I thought about all I went thru during those years of living with her, how stressful that was. And she was getting dementia, and being around her was super super stressful. Since she made it easy on herself? .... I made it easy on myself. I stayed in my own house. I DID take care of her.. but she didn't get her way, for once.
It sounds like I don't love her, but I genuinely do. I don't hold it against her. I understand she didn't have the raising that she gave me, and that she had her human limitations, and maybe she didn't truly understand how things impacted on my life.
Heh heh.... oh well. It was different!!!

Back in the day.... they broke our plate when we reached 18! I was home longer than any of our 5 siblings, leaving home at the ripe old age of 20. My mom "facilitated" the move! And, it was definitely a case of "ready or not", you're out the door! I hadn't even finished my post secondary education (vocational school). I left on *her* terms, not mine.

American women have changed drastically for the worst, IMO, and the biggest problem is that they're way too damn polite to admit that anything they or another woman has done ... is a failure, or might be morally wrong, or has adversely affected others.
They just keep mindlessly charging down the same road, just "cockeyed optimists" (as the song from the movie South Pacific described it).

Sometimes I think we play a part in creating trends, by giving in to them.
When I lost my job, I did that for while, because I knew I'd never get a decent job around here, which proved to be true. But I didn't anticipate how extremely inflated the housing market was. I was pretty much priced out of it, unless I just surrendered every nickel I had, for the sake of having a house
I bucked the trend and held onto my old house, and just accepted lesser employment. I do despise my job, but I try to look for the positives in it, because I know I'm just an indentured servant for a period of time.
I tell ya, this country is absolutely azz backwards. It makes no sense whatsover to me, to extensively educate and train a worker, and, for them to be a GOOD and responsible worker.... and to shitcan all that, and put them in some kind of a suckass job, and give their old job to a younger person who doesn't give a damn.
At least I have my house, and it gives me a lot of satisfaction. I'm not investing any more into today's "new economy" any more than I have to, it's for the birds.

When I was downsized, being a female didn't get me any preferential treatment. It did "help" me to get rehired, but it still took three years to get a full time job with benefits.
So many of my coworkers who were also downsized were married, though... so, if there are two mules hitched to the unemployment wagon, there is a much more hopeful scenario there. You have "another" money pot available to you (unless your mate also lost their job... but then, that makes for two unemployment checks). You also have a double social network to help you find another job.
Single people are much more screwed in a job loss.

I am not an expert on CA property taxes. I hope this pointed you in the right direction to research better CA property tax rules, regulations, procedures.
If you're curious about a specific property, you could Google. Just key in the county name and search for the Property Valuation Administrator. Such as..... "Boyd County, KY assessor" or "Lawrence County, OH PVA". If it's a less populated area, sometimes you can't even find the site, or if you do, it isn't much help. Usually major metro areas have the most information. They'll tell you everything about a property, show tract maps, photos, historic facts like how much the actual tax was in a given year. You can search by a person's name, or an address.

I know several people who have turned to truck driving, leaving their families for several weeks at a time, just to eek out a meager living having lost their higher paying jobs in manufacturing or other sectors, and now this!!
I do too, Judes. Guess the only occupations left to kill now, would be those in the medical fields? But around here, even those are beginning to suffer. Too many people trying to drink from the same well.

I started taking more Vitamin E (800 IE) to thin my blood, at least it's kind to my stomach.

I made the mistake of buying some of the Chinese garlic from Sam's Club. It was super cheap! It went bad so quickly I really didn't get to use it, so I lost my money. They usually bag up a lot of it together in little mesh bags - when I see this, I don't even need to look at the label. I buy American Garlic now..... ONLY.

" He simply has, in my view, given up the willingness to fight for economic justice in this country. "
He never HAD a willingness. One of the very first things out of his mouth after he was elected was that he was NOT bringing jobs back from China (or wherever). I said goodbye to him right there. There's just no way this country can ever survive economically if that's going to be his policy.

Long long ago, I had a boyfriend who was 14 years younger than me. Even though *I* did not say or even THINK a word of criticism about his making much less than me.... in HIS mind, it was a huge issue.
Most of the men I've connected with in the last thirty years have been incredibly lazy. I would never criticize WHAT job they had, as long as they cared enough to make the effort. But it seems like if a woman makes any money at all, that automatically puts her in the category of Sugar Mama. They have a heck of an attitude. Won't work at work, and won't work at home. One person can't do it all, it takes two. I think American men are often tremendously self pitying and super lazy, if you'll pardon a different viewpoint.

If they were bringing back jobs, while they were cutting back on unemployement benefits, it would be fine. But ya can't have your cake and eat it too. Personally, I vote for jobs. They should have been focussing on that in the first place. UE is well and good, but jobs would solve everything.

Jiminy cripes unlawfl, *no wonder* you ain't got any Christmas money. That's around twice the amount that I pay for property taxes, annually. My house payments = $0 since 1993. (You oughtta reconsider whether renting is better than buying?) Ack, I spent my money between Black Friday and Cyber Monday - but locally! Got a new vacuum cleaner, a new coffee maker, some fancy good-smelling things.... yes, I shop for me, LOL.

Excellent point, unlawfl. But of course, that's always the one of the very popular pat solutions that people give to the unemployed.... "relocate".
I don't think "one size fits all".
It might be more in a person's best intererests to stay right where they are.
It was for me, because having my little house paid off, allowed me to "float" longer .. I wasn't under as much pressure to take the wrong job, just to have a job. Nobody could throw me out, as long as I paid my taxes. The worst they could do to me is to shut off my utilities, and at least I wouldn't be out on the street, or living with relatives who don't want me there, or sleeping in my car.
My mother was here, and she was starting to have serious health issues, and desperately needed me here, to look out for her interests.
I have paid a big price, as far as how far down the career ladder I've slid, just to survive. Also, it has taken me more than ten years to get back to the same salary I had before I was downsized.
But I'm a lot better satisfied with less, to be in the area I grew up in, rather than in a place where I knew nobody at all, and had no friends or relatives to help me.

If you want to get an idea of how deep this has gotten, read here: jobsearch.about.com/u/sty/unemployment/unemployedstory/The best one I read was called "Welcome to Hell, American Style". It is not uncommon now, apparently, to go for two and three years and not be able to find a job. Back twelve years ago when I was downsized, my longest stint was ten months, and it was murder, to put it mildly. I can't even imagine what it would be like to try to survive for more than two years. My God, you wouldn't have a pot to pee in.

I always tread with great caution when I have to deal with them. You never know whether you're talking to a mentally unbalanced cowboy or what. You should be able to pick up within a few sentences, what their attitude is. If they're majorly weird, I try to say as little as possible, and not appear to challenge their authority. I have met some who were true gentlemen, and cut me a break when I probably should have had a ticket.
But yeah, if they get your number, for any reason? .... they WILL follow your car, any time you make a move... be on your best behavior. Or move somewhere else.

Maybe we could give it a shot to see if it worked, but I dunno. I'd have to see it to believe it. It might create more problems than it solved. Money isn't everything.
I think probably 90 percent of the crime that happens in this country is because of dope, directly or indirectly. Waltc is right when he says we're a nation of dopers. It's incredible.

Soda pop, even the kind with sugar, is very hard on my stomach now that I'm in my 50's. I'm not sure if it's the carbonation, the acidic nature of the stuff, or what, but I've just about quit drinking it.
Started drinking at least two quarts of water a day.
Goodbye, acid reflux disease. I don't have that any more.
Artificial sweeteners, I've observed, give me the schitts. I still do drink some pop, even some diet pop, but I think it's best to minimize it in the diet. I get tired of having irritable bowels. It's nice to have normal bowel and stomach function again.
